China’s 6G Space Race is On!

The 6G Race is On, but in Space!

6G Satellites transmitting from Space

As China’s 6G Test Satellite is already in Orbit, it has leap-frogged the world in satellite communication.

Having just rolled out 5G, China is already testing the world’s first 6G satellite into space to test the technology. To be clear, 5G is still in its infancy with most people around the world still on 4G networks. Singapore, South Korea and Japan are the only other countries with a nationwide rollout of 5G besides China. Countries like the UK and Europe, the US and Australia have had a much more limited rollout, often focused only on a handful of cities.

On November 6, the 6G Test Satellite was ferried to space along with 12 other satellites on board a Long March 6 carrier rocket by the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in China’s northern Shanxi Province. This satellite will be used to verify the performance of 6G frequency bands in space. It will be used in testing 6G technology in space as the 6G bandwidth expands into high-frequency terahertz waves to achieve greater data-transmission speeds. And while this research is still in its infancy, it is expected this new cutting edge technology to be over 100 (and even 10,000) times more powerful than 5G’s capabilities, enabling lossless transmission through space.

China’s Ministry of Science and Technology said in a statement that it will set up two working groups to carry out the task. One group will consist of relevant government departments responsible for promoting and advising how 6G research and development will be carried out. The other team will be made up of 37 universities, research institutes and enterprises, which will lay out the technical side of 6G and how such technology could be implemented.

The satellite is also equipped with an optical remote sensing load sensing system that could monitor crop disasters, forest fire-prevention, forest inspection, monitoring of water conservation, mountain floods and major infrastructure development.

Top Speed

NBN – 100 megabits per second (top tier available)

5G – 1,450 megabits per second (US test of peak speed)

6G – 8,000,000 megabits per second (projected estimates)

The Five Eyes is a system of electronic espionage by Australia, Canada, the United States, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. They have excluded Huawei from their auctions.

“Their decision (to ban Huawei) will put the Five Eyes ten years behind China (and the EU if it resists US pressure) in 5G and its associated technologies” Godfree Roberts
