USS Gerald R Ford Ordered To The Middle East
As President Donald Trump ordered the USS Gerald Ford to the Middle East, Venezuela would breathe a sigh of relief.
His goal for the USS Gerald Ford is to support the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), which is currently operating in the Arabian Sea, or has already retreated safely further into the Indian Ocean due to concerns over Iran’s newly acquired long-range hypersonic missiles, known for their carrier-killing capability.
Hypersonic missiles are weapons capable of traveling at speeds over Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound. What sets them apart is their ability to maneuver mid-flight, changing course and altitude, which makes them much harder to detect and intercept than traditional ballistic missiles that follow a set path.
Iran’s newly acquired missiles are widely considered dangerous carrier-killers. With the USS Gerald Ford nearby, the USS Abraham Lincoln might feel more confident moving closer to the Arabian Sea or even right into the Strait of Hormuz for some decisive extremities if talks with Iranian officials fall through.

The USS Gerald R Ford (CVN-78), the United States Navy’s newest and most capable nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has already spent more than 230 days at sea, and her deployment has been further extended. US officials confirmed on Friday that the supercarrier will head to the Middle East as President Donald Trump considers whether to take military action against Iran, as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high.
It is expected to take at least a week for CVN-78, which began her current deployment on June 24, 2025, to reach the Middle East.
Serious Show Of Force To Address Tensions With Iran
The US has steadily built up its forces for potential operations against the Islamic Republic, deploying another carrier strike group last month, with a dozen Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation stealth fighters also ordered to bases in the region last week.
Trump warned Tehran on Thursday that if a deal can’t be reached, it would be “very traumatic,” and suggested, “They should agree very quickly.”
The USS Gerald R Ford and her escorts will join the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, which arrived in the Arabian Sea last month after previously operating in the South China Sea.
The deployment of a second CSG should send a strong message.
It was last June that two United States Navy aircraft carriers, the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) and the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), were deployed to the Middle East, and the flattops supported Operation Midnight Hammer, the airstrikes against Iran’s nuclear program.
Longer Deployments
Given how long USS Gerald R Ford has already spent at sea, it is actually surprising that the carrier is being sent to the Middle East. But it is not the first time, the supercarrier has seen her deployments extended.
CVN-78 previously spent a total of 239 days at sea during her 2023-2024 deployment, which was extended twice in response to the Israel-Hamas conflict. It is unclear how much longer the carrier could remain deployed, but as the newest carrier, USS Gerald R Ford is now the Navy’s go-to warship.
