Jesus’ Baptism at the Jordan River

John 1

²⁸ These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming unto him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world!

³⁰ This is He of whom I said, ‘After me cometh a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’

³¹ And I knew Him not; but that He should be made manifest to Israel, therefore have I come baptizing with water.”

³² And John bore record, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from Heaven like a dove, and It abode upon Him.

³³ And I knew Him not. But He that sent me to baptize with water, the Same said unto me, ‘Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, the Same is He that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.’

³⁴ And I saw and bore record that this is the Son of God.”

Matthew 3:13 Then came Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John to be baptized by him.

¹⁴ But John forbad Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by Thee, and comest Thou to me?”

¹⁵ And Jesus answering said unto him, “Suffer it to be so now, for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John suffered Him.

¹⁶ And Jesus, when He had been baptized, went up straightway out of the water. And lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon Him.

¹⁷ And lo, a voice came from Heaven, saying, “This Is My Beloved Son, In Whom I Am Well Pleased.”

Andrew and Peter

³⁵ Again the next day John stood with two of his disciples,

³⁶ and looking upon Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”

³⁷ And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

³⁸ Then Jesus turned and saw them following, and said unto them, “What seek ye?” They said unto Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, being interpreted, “Master”), “where dwellest Thou?”

³⁹ He said unto them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He dwelt and stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

⁴⁰ One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

⁴¹ He first found his own brother Simon and said unto him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is, being interpreted, “the Christ”).

⁴² And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, He said, “Thou art Simon, the son of Jonah. Thou shalt be called Cephas” (which is by interpretation, “a stone”).

Philip and Nathanael

⁴³ The day following, Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and found Philip and said unto him, “Follow Me.”

⁴⁴ Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

⁴⁵ Philip found Nathanael and said unto him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and the Prophets wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

⁴⁶ And Nathanael said unto him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said unto him, “Come and see.”

⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!”

⁴⁸ Nathanael said unto Him, “How knowest Thou me?” Jesus answered and said unto him, “Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.”

⁴⁹ Nathanael answered and said unto Him, “Rabbi, Thou art the Son of God; Thou art the King of Israel.”

⁵⁰ Jesus answered and said unto him, “Because I said unto thee, ‘I saw thee under the fig tree,’ believest thou? Thou shalt see greater things than these.”

⁵¹ And He said unto him, “Verily, verily I say unto you, hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Turning Water into Wine

John 2

¹ And on the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there;

² and both Jesus and His disciples were called to the marriage.

³ And when they lacked wine, the mother of Jesus said unto Him, “They have no wine.”

⁴ Jesus said unto her, “Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.”

⁵ His mother said unto the servants, “Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it.”

⁶ And there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of the purifying of the Jews, holding twenty to thirty gallons apiece.

⁷ Jesus said unto them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.

⁸ And He said unto them, “Draw some out now, and bear it unto the governor of the feast.” And they took it.

⁹ When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, not knowing from whence it had come (but the servants who drew the water knew), the governor of the feast called the bridegroom

¹⁰ and said unto him, “Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine, and when men have drunk well, then that which is worse; but thou hast kept the good wine until now.”

¹¹ This beginning of miracles Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

¹² After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brethren and His disciples; and they continued there a few days.

Tempted for Forty Days

Luke 4

¹ And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

² Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

³ And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.

⁴ And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

⁵ And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

⁶ And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

⁷ If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

⁸ And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

⁹ And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

¹⁰ For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

¹¹ And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

¹² And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

¹³ And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
