US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s unconfirmed plan of a trip to the island of Taiwan keeps troubling the US as Pelosi, US President Joe Biden and Democrats are now facing pressure instead of “encouragements” from the Republicans on the matter, with Chinese experts warning that if the US eventually let the partisan struggle and internal politics hijack its strategic decision-making, it would definitely bring a new crisis in the Taiwan Straits.
Republicans knew that Democrats, especially Pelosi and Biden, are now facing a dilemma – visiting the island may prompt China’s military reaction and a serious geopolitical crisis will emerge and Pelosi will be in danger as well. According to analysts, canceling the trip will benefit Republicans, as they can say that Democrats are being too weak and dare not to challenge China. The Biden administration and Pelosi still have a chance to keep the mistake from becoming a much bigger one, and if they – both Democrats and Republicans – underestimate China’s warning, it would be extremely dangerous.
China is telling the US loud and clear where the bilateral “red line” is, and the US should keep its promise of not supporting Taiwan secessionism. If Washington doesn’t keep the bilateral ties away from the edge but instead, insists on crashing against the red line the consequence will definitely be a deadly disaster, experts warn.
The American aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and its strike group, including a guided missile destroyer and a guided missile cruiser, had set out from Singapore heading northeast towards the South China Sea, according to ship-tracking information provided by Beijing-based think tank the South China Sea Strategic Probing Initiative.
On the other side, the Chinese PLA will not sit idly by if Pelosi visits Taiwan, Chinese defense ministry warns; indicating PLA ‘fully prepared’ for all scenarios. But US officials also said their fighter jets, ships, and other assets would likely provide protection for the military plane that would be carrying Pelosi.
In a now-banned tweet, Hu Xijin, a commentator with the Chinese-state-owned Global Times, wrote, “If US fighter jets escort Pelosi’s plane into Taiwan, it is an invasion. The [People’s Liberation Army] has the right to forcibly dispel Pelosi’s plane and the US fighter jets, including firing warning shots and making tactical movement of obstruction.”
“If ineffective, then shoot them down,” Hu added, per the New York Post.
To Pelosi, a trip to Taiwan would be a significant capstone to end her career. Or for Nancy to back down would be an enormous blow not only to herself but also to a free and democrative liberal Taiwan, where it’s about the only place in Asia where Lgbtqia+ could parade around with pride and dignity. So what are the likely scenarios? One might led to a Sarajevo incident of 1914! With BeiDou precision, the PLA only need a couple of DF26s to finish them off.
Top military experts on China have warned that a visit to Taiwan by Pelosi could heighten the risk of an “accident” that could spark a military crisis in the region.
“There’s a risk of an accident, not a risk of an imminent Chinese attack on Taiwan,” Bonnie Glaser, a leading China expert and director of the Asia program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, told Insider.
Should she visit the island, approximately 100 miles from China’s southeast coast, Pelosi could spark a Sarajevo incident.
