The Unspoken Will of God
Wow, is there such a thing as the Unspoken Will of God?
Yes, there is!
Some of God’s oracles were written with God’s fingers. And they are the Ten Commandments.
Others are scattered all over the Books of Moses. Much of these were collated and for the Mishnah that form the 613 mitzvot. Many of the mitzvot cannot be observed now, following the destruction of the Second Temple, although they still retain religious significance.
And the LORD delivered unto me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them was written according to all the words which the LORD spoke with you on the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. Deuteronomy 9:10
Others were written when God told Moses to write them down:
And the LORD said unto Moses, “Write thou these words, for according to the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.” Exodus 34:27
But surprisingly, there were the unspoken Word of God! Extra blessings await those who touches the heart of God; like parents, they have their secret wishes for their children. So is God. But how do we know God’s unspoken will if they were unspoken?
To be unspoken would also mean unwritten.
The answer is quite simple. Like parents they could be hinted at but not quite spoken of. So how could we understand the unspoken Word of God if there are any?
The answer lies in the Four fasts of Zechariah:
“Thus saith the LORD of hosts: ‘The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness and cheerful feasts. Therefore love the truth and peace.’ Zechariah 8:19
The Scriptures do not give any details, but they are in the Oral Law:
Seventeenth of Tammuz (Shiva Asar B’Tammuz, minor fast) — the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem before the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD. – June 27, 2021 (July
16,17, 2022)Ninth of Av (Tisha B’Av, full fast) — fall of Jerusalem on the same dates in 587 BC and 70 AD. – July 18, 2021 (August
6,7, 2022)Third of Tishrei: Fast of Gedalia (Tzom Gedalia, minor fast) — assassination of Gedaliah, the righteous governor of Judah (II Kings 25:22–26). – Sept 9, 2021 (Sept 28, 2022)
Tenth of Tevet (Asara B’Tevet, minor fast) — the siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon. – Dec 14, 2021 (January 3, 2023)
But notice, today these fasts mainly by Jews — the “house of Judah” — will turn to be a joy and into “gladness and cheerful feasts.” How so, you may ask? God must have accepted their fasts prayers and those who participate in them would be duly rewarded. Those who fast will turn into joy! Extra blessings await those who touches the heart of God.
These four fasts are all related to Jerusalem, God’s beloved city with its Temple where God initially told Moses to build a sanctuary for Him to dwell. Thus, they needed to be done with the right attitude:
“Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, ‘When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month even those seventy years, did ye fast at all unto Me, even to Me?” Zechariah 7:5
“When you held days of fasting every fifth and seventh month all these seventy years, were you doing it for me? And when you held feasts, was that for me?” MSG
The right attitude means to care about God, to think about his welbeing; for he asks: do you fast for me?
The final place for this sanctuary or Temple was and is to be in Jerusalem, and God wants to dwell with us.
At that time they shall call Jerusalem the Throne of the LORD and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem. Jeremiah 3:17
“Thus saith the LORD God: This is Jerusalem. I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her. Ezekiel 5:5
And many nations shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob. And He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths.” For the law shall go forth from Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. Micah 4:2
[…] — even those seventy years, during the entire captivity, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me? Had it really been done in God’s honor, for the purpose of serving him: Feeling the same pain as he has? Sympathy with him for not having a home with us on earth? Or an feeling that his holy land was in ruin and under the control of the heathens? (for more on this, see the Unspoken Will of God) […]
