Khorramshahr-4, a Missile fired US base at Diego Garcia

As tensions continue to grow between the US, Israel, and Iran the Red Sea, another major oil transport, could be targeted next if the Houthis get involved.

The Yemeni militant group, which is armed and funded by Iran, has already threatened they will step in, with Houthis leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi stating earlier this month that ‘our fingers are on the trigger.’

Iran fired two Khorramshahr-4 missiles reaching 5,300 kilometers away at Diego Garcia.

Diego Garcia, at 5,300 kilometers away, experts believe that’s “beyond the previously estimated maximum range of Iranian missiles.

Iran fired two medium-range ballistic missiles at the British-US Diego Garcia base in the Chagos Islands, US officials have said.

Neither of the missiles hit their target, with one believed to have been intercepted by a US warship’s SM-3 interceptor and the other failing in flight, according to The Wall Street Journal.

It is the first confirmed use of intermediate-range ballistic missiles by Tehran – launched from some 3,300 miles away – and marks a significant escalation of the war.

US media reported that Iran launched the attack on Friday morning local time, but the BBC reported that the attempted strike had happened in the last few days, not on Friday.

The Khorramshahr-4, a 20-tonne rocket that can carry up to 80 cluster munitions, is likely to be the model that was fired towards the Indian Ocean territory.

It is thought that the Khorramshahr-4, with a lighter warhead, could hit targets up to 2,700 miles away – putting Britain and Europe at risk of strikes.

Weapons with a range of 3,300 miles would put the USS Gerald Ford at risk at the repair port in Crete after a fire aboard from an Iranian attack

Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, claimed last month that Tehran was limiting its missile range to 1,242 miles (or 2,000 kilometers).

Defence analysts told The Telegraph that the Iranian missile could easily reach RAF Akrotiri, in Cyprus, and Sir Keir Starmer should be worried that Tehran could target the base.

Mr Araghchi warned the Prime Minister on Friday night that he had been “putting British lives at risk” by allowing the US to use UK bases.

He told Yvette Cooper, the Foreign Secretary, that allowing the US to use the bases was “participation in aggression” and Iran had a right to self-defence.

The attempted strike on Diego Garcia will probably raise calls for further British action in the Middle East to support US efforts, but there are serious questions about the UK’s military capabilities and whether it has the capacity to join the war.

On Saturday, Kemi Badenoch, the Tory leader, said Britain was being “dragged into” the Iran war “whether we like it or not” and criticised Sir Keir for not backing US strikes earlier.

If Iran could hit US bases at Diego Garcia, they could also hit Paris and London

On Friday, the Government agreed to allow the US to use British bases to launch strikes on Iranian sites targeting the Strait of Hormuz.

It had previously only allowed US forces to use the bases for defensive operations to prevent Iran firing missiles that put British interests or lives at risk.

Downing Street has said that ministers approved an expansion of the targets to help protect ships in the strait, a conduit for 20 per cent of the world’s oil, based on “collective self-defence.”

The attempted missile attack on Diego Garcia will raise questions about the UK’s preparedness to fend off Iranian strikes on British bases around the world as the war drags on.
