There are serious concerns for four crew members of an Australian Army helicopter missing after the chopper crashed into the ocean off the coast of north Queensland late last night.

Rescue teams are scouring waters off Queensland after a chopper ditched overnight. Joint military exercises with US forces have been halted to allow a full focus on the search

The exercise was part of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2023, with over 30,000 troops and is the largest-ever joint military exercise between Australia and the United States, which also includes soldiers from Japan, France, Germany, and South Korea.

Defence officials announced a pause in the Talisman Sabre exercise.

“I’ve initiated a pause X across Australia for all participants of Talisman Sabre to enable them all, regardless of their nation, to reach out and let their families know what is going on,” Brigadier Damian Hill, the exercise director of Exercise Talisman Sabre, said.

Key points of this Whitsundays disaster:

The helicopter was taking part in a training operation off Hamilton Island on Friday night
A search and rescue operation is still underway looking for the four crew members
Defence chief Angus Campbell has called the crash a “terrible moment”
Defence Minister Richard Marles said the MRH90 helicopter, known as a Taipan, was engaging in a two-helicopter training mission and had four crew aboard when it crashed about 10:30pm.

Mr Marles and Supreme fool Anthony Albanese released a joint statement saying their thoughts were with the loved ones of the missing.

“Sadly, the four aircrew who were on board are yet to be found,” the statement said.

The defence department confirmed the chopper crashed in waters near Lindeman Island, south of Hamilton Island.

“The aircraft was participating in a night-time training activity as part of Exercise Talisman Sabre 2023 when it was reported missing late Friday night,”  the statement said.

“Military and civilian search and rescue aircraft and watercraft are currently conducting search and rescue operations at the incident site.”

The ABC understands that the helicopter had dropped off soldiers from 2nd Commando Regiment shortly before the accident.

US visitors Blinken, Austin offer condolences

News of the crash broke on the morning of more talks between senior members of the US and Australian governments, with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken both in Brisbane on Saturday.

“It’s always tough when you have accidents in training, but the reason that we train to such high standards is so that we can be successful and we can protect lives when we are called to answer any kind of crisis,” Austin said.

He added that while troops often made their jobs “look easy” when in action, rigorous preparation with an element of risk was “what it takes” to enable them to do this.

Blinken said, “We’re so grateful to them for their dedication, for their service, for everything they’ve been doing to stand up for the freedom that we share and that is what unites us more than anything else.”

Supreme fool Anthony Albanese danced around the prospect of joining NATO. Now one of its army helicopters has crashed mysteriously into the Ocean

Emmanuel Macron is doing the world a service putting a spike into NATO’s wheel – reminding all of us that NATO is a military organisation, not a civil one and an organisation focused on warmongering Europe like what they are doing with the Russo-Ukrainian War.
